Asymmetry and undercuts remain a hot trend for women, both as bold style statements and clever means of handling an unruly shape or texture. However, Pureology Artist and Redken Certified Colorist Andi Scarbrough recognizes the challenge this presents to hairdressers who must find creative solutions for special occasion styling on these cuts. To help, she has shared steps to creating a few of her favorite looks.

GATSBY’S GIRL

 

1. On damp hair, apply a golf ball size amount of Silk Bodifier mousse and work through root to end.

 

2. Clip top section back and wrap dry under-section smooth with a demand brush

 

3. Center part the top section, use a Denman and round brush to dry.

 

4. Take vertical, pie shaped sections around the crown of the head, and using a 1/2” iron, coil wrap the section around the iron and then clip in place to cool.

 

5. Remove clips, and spray with hairspray. Brush set out and smooth waves together using a Mason Pearson style brush.

 

6. Use Pureology Dry Condition as a finisher to reduce frizz and melt fly-aways into the waves.  Finish with Strength Control hairspray for hold and shine.

 

 

SWAGGER + SWOOP

 

1. On damp hair, section off the long, mowhawk section and clip away.

 

2. Apply a medium hold high shine product like Pureology Gold Definer and wrap dry under-section for maximum movement and smooth hairline.

 

3. Apply Root Lift volumizer to the root of the top section and blowdry using a Denman brush to direct the roots forward.

 

4. Next, apply Silk Bodifier Mousse and round brush through, setting section by section as you go.

 

5. Mist with hairspray and let cool completely. 

 

6. While the top section cools, apply a dime size amount of cuticle polisher to hands and work through the underside of the haircut for shine and control

 

7. Take out clips and use a soft bristle brush to smooth the sections into a smooth side swoop.

 

 

LOST BOYS DON’T CRY

 

1. On dry hair, apply a ping-pong ball size amount of Silk Bodifier mousse and work through root to end.

 

2. Blow-dry on low heat and work product in using just hands.

 

3. Section off the long, mowhawk section and clip away.

 

4. Apply a dime sized dollop of Density Definer wax and use to piece and sculpt sides and hairline

 

5. Drop top section and work in remaining product on your hands, separating the top section diagonally across the top of head into two subsections.

 

6. Braid the two subsections and secure with a clear elastic, then fold and tuck ends of braids under the opposite section. Use your fingers and a little hairspray to pull and separate the braids to unkempt perfection.

 

 

THE HIGH ROLLER

 

1. On damp hair, section off the long, mowhawk section and clip away.

 

2. Apply a medium hold high shine product like Pureology Gold Definer and wrap dry under-section for maximum movement and smooth hairline.

 

3. Apply Root Lift volumizer to the roots of the top section and blowdry, using a Denman brush to direct the roots forward.

 

4. Apply Gold Definer through midlengths and ends of top section and round brush to create volume

 

5. Lightly tease the top section, misting lightly with a working hairspray as you go.

 

6. Use a soft bristle brush to smooth the section forward, roll the section around your fingers back and away from the face.

 

7. Release tension and let roll drape to one side.  Secure with large bobby pins and finish with hairspray.
