Step 1: Sectioning – Perimeter: Beginning at the top of the head shape, section the hair by establishing a radial parting from ear to ear.

Step 2: Create a sub section from top of pre-existing fringe down to front of ear.

Step 3: Cut: Begin your cut using the corner of the fringe as your guide, connect the sides to the fringe by overdirecting the hair at the recession and cut in a ‘c-shape’ to connect fringe. Repeat by moving from side to side. Tip: Form a cupping or ‘c-shape’ when cutting to establish face framing. Cut hair moving from side to side to ensure that you retain symmetry.

Step 4: Create another subsection moving from top of fringe and slightly pivoting back to the top of ear. Following your guide, overdirect the hair toward the opposite side of face and cut. Repeat on the opposite side. Continue cutting from side to side until you reach the radial parting. Tip: The density of hair determines the size of your sectioning. You should always be able to see your guide and be sure to retain as much length as possible below the cheekbone.

Step 5: Moving to the back, overdirect the hair from the radial parting back and down. Beginning at the center back and moving left to right, cut perimeter utilizing deep point cutting 2-3” into the hair. Tip: Deep point cutting 2-3” into the perimeter ensures a softened edge.

Step 6: Next comb hair at natural fall.  Moving to the side utilize deep point cutting to connect the back to the sides. Tip: When combing hair down at natural fall imagine an umbrella opening up. The hair falls down from the curve of the head.

Step 7: Cut - Interior:  Starting at the side, section hair 1-2” above the ear, moving from the radial parting diagonally back to center of headshape above the occipital bone. Comb and twist entire section into a rope. Relax with slack allowing hair to fall over and cut creating deep ‘v’s into the last 4 – 5” of the hair. Tip: When cutting deep ‘v’s into the hair be sure to close your sheers completely to create deep lines.

Step 8: Moving to opposite side. Section hair moving from the side radial parting diagonally back to center.  Comb and Twist entire section, with slack, into a rope allowing last 4 – 5 inches of hair to cascade over your fingers. Continue by cutting deep ‘v’s into the hair

Step 9: Dry Cutting: Blowdry and flat iron hair. Beginning at the fringe area, tilt head to side and gently clean up the face frame line, refining it ever so slightly. Repeat on opposite side.

Step 10: Moving to the fringe, utilizing shallow point cutting and holding hair at two fingers depth, blend the transition area connecting the fringe to the face framing. Repeat on opposite side.

Step 11: Texturizing - Slicing:

Beginning at the top of the ear at the transition point from front to back, create a large pie shaped section starting at the top of the crown and dropping out 1-2” above the ear to retain perimeter length. Overdirect the section up allowing last 3-4” to fall over and in large carving motions slice the hair to remove unwanted length. Continue taking pie shaped sections moving back from one side to the other on the back of headshape.

Step 12: Texturizing – Thinning: Repeating the same pie shaped sectioning pattern as before,  twist hair in each section up and using a thinning shear remove weight in the last 4-5” of hair. Tip: when using thinning shears close scissors only half way as you move out toward ends to avoid chop marks and to remove hair gradually enabling you to gauge the shape.

Step 13: Texturizing – Point Cutting and Slicing:

Next, utilizing both slicing and point cutting methods, remove additional weight throughout the entire crown area.  Begin sectioning moving diagonally back from where the hair leaves the head at fringe area to 2-3 inches above the top of ear. Comb hair straight up and slice and point cut to remove both bulk and length in the last 4-5” of hair. Move to opposite side and repeat. Finally, move to center back pulling hair up in one section and removing any unwanted threads. Tip: Taking the time to switch shears and partings enables you to whittle the hair down gradually. Cutting hair all at once creates unwanted horizontal lines.

Step 14: Texturizing – Fringe:

Utilizing your thinning shears twist and thin small 1” sections throughout the entire fringe to create a soft edge. Tip: Taking too large of sections removes too much bulk whereas to small of sections won’t make a difference.

Step 15: Finish: Apply your favorite wax and work into the layers. Tip: When distributing the wax throughout the hair avoid roughing up the cuticle; rather massage it through the ends with the grain of the hair to give an effect of an ‘old’ blow dry.
