The Event: Scruples Symposium 2016, January 17-21, 2015, at the Barceló Maya Colonial in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

The Details: MODERN joined nearly 400 salon professionals, including stylists, salon owners, distributors, educators and more, gathered in Mexico for Scruples’ five-day biennial symposium.

The week opened with a cocktail party and runway presentation of the brand’s new collections for 2016. Attendees were the first to see every new Scruples collection for 2016. Mia Liguori McHugh, co-president creative served as emcee, and welcomed attendees alongside co-president marketing/advertising, and sister, Tracy Liguori.

Artists making up the Scruples Design Team who were responsible for creating the collections, including Amie Breckenridge Goltz, director of education; Katie Nielsen, design team member; and Chris Venesky, design team member, took the stage for live demonstrations before the runway show.

On Monday, special guest and Redken Global Artistic Ambassador Kris Sorbie spoke to attendees about color techniques, such as seamless ombres and color contouring, as well as the importance of a consultation before any service.

The following days were packed with classes ranging from color and cut presentations, hands-on cut and color classes, and Venesky’s “$1,000 Cup of Coffee” business seminar.

The week ended in a Wednesday-evening celebratory dinner looking over the Caribbean Sea.

Launches: McHugh announced four launches and relaunches the company is introducing for 2016 during Monday-morning special presentation: True Integrity NN Series; Urban Shock Pastel Mixer; Texture Fusion; and a new addition to the Power Blonde line.

The Last Word: “At Scruples events, attendees get to know the owners. We’re there, we’re very hands-on and part of the program....Hearing from the customers who use the product is what makes us better.”-Mia and Tracy on why they are present and involved at Scruples events.

Keep Your Eyes Out For: The brand will be celebrating its 100th Training For Tomorrow education program this September at the Scruples Academy in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
