Hi jhall- Dennis Bernard has an accelerator in his line of products (TCA - The Color Accelerator for Hair). Here's what he had to say about them. Hope this helps: “Oxidation causes rust on a car. Oxidation also affects hair color in terms of dryness, damage and fade-out. TCA contains antioxidants, vitamins and nutrients that eliminate the free radicals that cause damage. This combination of ingredients allows the hair shaft to accept pigmentation of the color faster. “One of the main ingredients in TCA is vitamin E, and the same way it eliminates free radicals from the body, it eliminates them from the hair shaft. When you use TCA, the odor is milder because it ‘implodes’ on the hair rather than ‘explodes.’ “Jojoba oil has restorative effects that produce a service that allows the hair to be in better condition after the service than before. Five drops per ounce into the color and developer will deliver a faster color service that leaves the hair not only looking better, but actually in better shape.” As to why manufacturers discourage the use of color accelerators, Bernard says, “I believe that it is the application of low dryer heat that intimidates the manufacturers and some stylists. They believe that the color will liquefy and/or cause a chemical burn. TCA when used properly, with a pre-punched plastic processing cap and low dryer heat allows the free ammonia to escape, simply allowing the color process to be accelerated and color fade-out to be eliminated. “Interestingly, TCA can also work without heat to prevent color fade out and if used with a plastic processing cap and body heat, will also accelerate the processing time.” Timing, he says, depends on the client, but the use of an accelerator will always shorten processing. “Our instructions reflect a four- to ten-minute processing time for most normal color situations; however, whether I am teaching color or perms, I always recommend that stylists check everything. A client’s past history should only serve as a guideline, timing and procedure can change from visit to visit. A fresh mind makes for a fresh approach.” Bernard says that his color accelerator can also be used in semi- and demipermanent formulas to prolong the life of the shade, and is suitable for even very delicate blonde colors. “The product does not keep processing beyond the desired result, so booking appointments is easy,” he asserts. “Guys like it because they don’t have to sit as long with color on their heads. Businesswomen love it because they can be in and out within their lunch hour.”
