I have really been enjoying the new Medi-Bac line of products introduced recently by Dermalongica. One of my most favorite items is the Clearing Mattifier: it is a silicone-based treatment 'ointment' which deals with the excess oil without drying, paralyzes bacteria and leaves a silky protective barrier on the surface of the skin. Whatever one uses, however, I find it of the utmost importance the first thing we all learned in Beauty School: keep the bacteria down! I love the use of ingredients such as salicylic acid (or benzalconium chloride to those sensitive to salicylic or who are pregnant, also great for our hands to sanitize them before we touch the client; it is not drying like alcohol is), triclosan (an enzyme which causes the cell membrane of bacteria to break down) and very cool technology which we've had in our arsenal since the 19th century; galvanic and hi-frequency currents! Galvanic intensifies the penetration of targeted ingredients to the skin condition you are treating, producing professional results by either softening the skin in preparation for extractions, or in soothing and calming it afterwards. And the High Frequency produces Ozone (O3), a natural germacide, which breaks down into O2, which is not only DEADLY to the bacteria causing acne, but it reduces inflammation by giving skin-damaging free-radicals that extra electron they are scavenging for! You can see the swelling go down before your eyes! Most importantly, gloves, mask and eyewear for the protection of both client and esthetician. I have a real problem when people come in and say, "the last time I got a facial somewhere I really broke out afterwards..." This shouldn't be happening! Those faces should be clearing up after our professional treatments; and we need to be the examples by providing the cleanest environment we possibly can to protect them. Let's all try to go back to the basics and really make an effort and goal to get to one of the roots of the acne problem: an overabundance of bacteria causing not only the acne, but dirty hands, phones, hair and other things touching the face spreading other bacteria types causing secondary infections to the open wounds of the acne. We all need to remember this as well as educating our clients to keep their skin clean and protected and give them access to the home care editions of what we used in the treatment room.
