Luis Alvarez: Paradise Lost

Luis Alvarez’s vision for Paradiso Perduto, or “Paradise Lost,” celebrates organic beauty, which the VP of Creative and Education for Aquage describes as nebulous and less structured.

“The boundaries of organic beauty cannot be described in geometric terms,” says Alvarez. “It’s hard to look at the outside shape and define it. It’s not a square or a triangle. It’s loose and interwoven. The interior is not defined by anything predictable, as it is interlaced with different patterns.

It’s more random and is softer as an interpretation. The look is more fluid.”

For this collection, Alvarez created and photographed styles among the weathered buildings in and around Miami. “These styles are timeless rather than timely,” says Alvarez. “These shapes felt appropriate in the environment, transcending the natural elements of sun, wind and humidity, which contribute as much to the creation of the hair styles as the Aquage styling, texturizing and finishing products we used to shape, mold, direct and interlace the lush, undulating texture of the hair.

“Whether we were working on shorter or longer hair, our goal was to create strand definition and separation allowing strands to flow in random interlacing patterns that sensuously frame the face and flow naturally without resisting the effects of gravity and environment.”

This stunning shoot isn’t Alvarez’s only recent accomplishment. He also created all the imagery for America’s Beauty Show this year and celebrated Aquage’s 10th anniversary.
